I hope it was because they were attempting to sing Marty Haugen songs! Actually, it is a weird story and written in what looks to be a lefty paper so take this with a grain of salt. The story also mentions a Ted Kennedy but not the one we all know. Perhaps some of the bloggers from Down Under can give us a better perspective on this situation?
